I have a website now.
Years ago, I quit social media (mostly Twitter) to protect my mental health and get my time back. I have not regretted it at all, so I do not intend to go back.
I did have one exception: Cohost. It was a social media platform which deliberately hid the metrics, among other design choices which hoped to create a social media which incentivised healthy, meaningful interactions with people. I wasn't exactly the chattiest person on there, but I did use it and I liked it.
Unfortunately, Cohost was not sustainable, so it's going away now. I still do not intend to use any social media (certainly not any Twitter alternatives).
One thing I really liked about Cohost was that I could use it to make long posts about things that interested me, and I also really enjoyed reading other people's long posts. Many of those people have decided that the way they will do that going forward is to run their own website, set up an RSS feed, and host it all themselves. I wasn't around back then, but I know that this is how the internet kinda used to work.
I think it sounds like a good idea, so I'm going to try it too.
Making a website is very new to me, but I really like the idea of doing it all myself with HTML and CSS, so this is what I'm going to do. It's going to be a huge learning process, but I am really looking forward to learning.
In the meantime though, there's not much to see. There is this post, and a home page. My hope is that in the future I'll have a more exciting home page, a good way to access all these blog posts, and maybe some other fun stuff too.
As for what I'll actually post about--usually music, video games, and things related to both (or either!). The next post, which I have copied and modified from Cohost, is a proper introduction to me and my interests.
I don't know if others feel this way, but I think stuff like this--people making and hosting their own websites--is the future. I think odds are pretty good that social media is going to drive all the good people away, and self-owned, self-made spaces are gonna be how we connect to each other.
Anyway, that's all from me for now. I'll see what I can do in the future for interacting with these posts (I'm not super crazy about 1-way communication), but in the meantime you can email me at ac3@ac3.blue. I am also in the #maj7 discord server (if you know, you know). See ya next time!
